Democrats flip JD Vance's old Senate seat blue in major Ohio upset stripping away Trump's power

Sherrod Brown has stormed back into the Senate, unseating Republican Senator Jon Husted in Ohio’s special election for the seat JD Vance gave up to become vice president.

The Democrat won 48.5 percent to Husted’s 46.5 percent with 90 percent of the vote counted, according to the Associated Press.

The win is a major prize in Democrats’ push to retake the Senate. They needed to gain four seats to take control of the chamber, and Ohio was among the GOP-held seats in the crosshairs.

Brown served three terms before losing to Republican Bernie Moreno by about 3.5 points in 2024.

He now takes back the seat Governor Mike DeWine handed to Husted, then his lieutenant governor, after JD Vance left the Senate to become vice president. Brown will serve out the final two years of Vance’s term.

Trump, who carried Ohio by about 11 points in 2024, endorsed Husted and held three rallies in October.

The race was the costliest of the 2026 general election, with more than $500 million spent or reserved on ads.

'Ohio is not for sale,' declared Brown at his victory rally, adding that voters sent a clear message that the state belongs to its people rather than special interests.

Husted, meanwhile, gave an emotional address to his supporters at his concession speech: 'America is a great nation. You should love it, and you should fight for our founding ideals that our rights belong fundamentally to us, not to government.'

Crypto super PAC Fairshake alone spent more than $45 million to stop Brown, a move widely seen as vengeful.

In 2024, Fairshake’s network spent roughly $40 million helping Moreno beat Brown, who then chaired the Senate Banking Committee and was one of the industry’s most prominent critics.

Brown and his allies hammered Husted for months over the FirstEnergy bribery scandal, the $61 million scheme that sent former Ohio House Speaker Larry Householder to prison.

Brown’s most memorable attack branded Husted 'the face of data centers in Ohio,' accusing him of handing $2.5 billion in tax incentives to the facilities.

Trump defended the industry at his Vandalia rally and praised Husted for a failed attempt to pass data-center legislation.

Brown went into Election Day narrowly ahead in the polls, with a 3.3-point edge in the RealClearPolitics average.

He ran as the challenger against a sitting senator, but many voters saw it the other way round.

A Bowling Green State University poll in early October found one in four Ohio voters wrongly believed Brown was the incumbent.

Dr Amy Acton also cruised to victory over GOP rival Vivek Ramaswamy in the race for Ohio governor

Brown will need to run and defend the seat in two years.

It was a successful night across the board for Ohio Democrats as gubernatorial Dr Amy Acton stormed to victory over GOP rival Vivek Ramaswamy.

Ramaswamy, a strong ally of JD Vance, handed Democrats a state Trump carried by about 11 points two years ago.

Acton won 50.7 percent compared to Ramaswamy's 46 percent with 85 percent of the vote counted, according to the Associated Press.

Acton becomes the first woman elected governor of Ohio and its first Jewish governor. Republican Nancy Hollister briefly served as governor by succession, from December 1998 to early January 1999.

Lively gave a glimpse into her cozy wind-down routine shortly after the drama involving her film It Ends With Us and her director and costar Justin Baldoni.

'Natural beauty is effortless,' she quipped at the bottom of her post, which pictured her taking a deep breath while the mask covered her face.

Lively also drew thought bubbles around her face, and in one, she wrote: 'If I don't look like I'm in the first trimester of life after this much effort I quit.'

She continued: 'I miss the 2000s when we just used that handsoap with fish characters on it on our face & called it a day.'

The Gossip Girl star also noted the lights in the background of her room in another thought bubble: 'My kids' star projector that I stole is a vibe tho.'

She set her candid post to the tune of Fergie and Ludacris' 2006 smash hit Glamorous.

'The look: no time but need to look cute while ALSO raising children,' the movie star, who was seen using products from her Blake Brown haircare brand, wrote over the clip.

'Moment of truth: bun out after running around the city,' she continued, before almost running out the door with her pants unbuttoned.

Her post comes after she was in a legal battle with Baldoni, and the former costars settled right before their trial was set to begin.

Baldoni was ultimately ordered to pay $400,000 of Lively's legal fees.

Lively previously sued Baldoni and his production company Wayfarer in December 2024.

Right before their trial was set to begin earlier this year, Lively was awarded just over $400,000 of the $8 million she sought in legal fees from their dispute due to his countersuit.

In her lawsuit, Lively asserted that she was subjected to sexual harassment as well as retaliation, alleging he orchestrated a smear campaign to harm her reputation after she brought up complaints about his behavior on set.

In response, Baldoni denied harassment and claimed Lively made complaints to seize creative control of the movie.

In June 2025, the countersuit was thrown out. In May of this year, just two weeks before the scheduled trial date, the former costars reached their settlement.

They also released a joint statement, writing that they 'remain firmly committed to workplaces free of improprieties and unproductive environments.'
