Aston Villa have threatened legal action against former Liverpool defender and football pundit Jamie Carragher, accusing him of making “unacceptable insults” about the club and its supporters.
The Premier League club announced its intention to take action in a social media statement on Friday, signed by chairman Nassef Sawiris.
The dispute followed comments Carragher made on the Stick to Football podcast earlier this week, where he told Villa supporters to “shut the fuck up” and said, “Aston Villa will never be Manchester United.”
The remarks came as Carragher discussed speculation linking Villa manager Unai Emery with a potential move to Manchester United, suggesting the Spaniard could be interested if the opportunity arose.

In its statement, Villa said it would not allow anyone to undermine the club’s ambitions in English and European football.
“Aston Villa will initiate legal action against Jamie Carragher for his unacceptable insults about the club and its fans,” Sawiris said.
“Aston Villa will not allow anyone to stop our ascension in English and European football.”
The club did not specify the legal grounds for the proposed action and had not immediately responded to a request for further comment.

Carragher sought to play down the controversy, insisting that his remarks were made in jest following criticism from Villa supporters over his comments about Emery and Manchester United.
“It was a joke after the stick Villa fans have given me over saying Emery may fancy joining Man Utd,” he said on social media.
“I hope these clown clips show me praising Emery/Villa as I have done for years and saying how pleased I was you won the 2026 Europa League in Istanbul.”
Carragher also stressed that his comments reflected his admiration for Emery rather than a lack of respect for Villa.
Speaking on The Overlap Daily, he described the Spaniard as the best manager in the Premier League and explained why he believed Manchester United should consider approaching him.
“I just think Unai Emery is the best manager in the league, and if you’re Man Utd, you’re thinking, ‘What’s the best we can get?’” he said.
