Arsenal moved six points clear at the top of the Premier League table after a hard-fought 1-0 win over Hull City at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday.
Mikel Arteta’s side were widely expected to overcome a Hull team without a league victory since August, but the visitors made life difficult for the title favourites despite Arsenal dominating possession and creating several chances.
Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard eventually broke the deadlock in the 72nd minute, scoring his first goal since early September to secure Arsenal’s ninth win in 10 games.
Arsenal had appealed for a penalty towards the end of the first half after Kai Havertz’s shirt was pulled by Nobel Mendy. However, a VAR review ruled that Havertz had been offside in the build-up.
Arsenal nearly doubled their lead late in the game when Madueke broke through on goal, but Tzolakis brought him down. The ball ricocheted off Mendy before Brooke Norton-Cuffy cleared it off the line.
The victory extended Arsenal’s winning run in the Premier League to five matches since their 3-0 defeat to Brighton in September, which remains their only league setback of the campaign.
Arsenal’s six-point advantage could be cut to three when title rivals Manchester City face Nottingham Forest in Saturday’s late kick-off. Man City are seeking to avoid a third consecutive defeat.
