At least 68 dead and more than 100 hurt after high-speed train crash in Spain: Fears more bodies will be found as questions remain over 'error' that led to smash

At least 68 dead and more than 100 hurt after high-speed train crash in Spain: Fears more bodies will be found as questions remain over 'error' that led to smash

The death toll of a fatal train crash in Spain which killed 68 people is expected to rise as questions remain over the technical room 'error' which caused the smash.

Three carriages were derailed when a train travelling from Madrid to Seville collided with a stationary one on the same route near the city of Toledo shortly before 9am yesterday.

It left 68 people dead and more than 100 injured in scenes described as 'apocalyptic' by surviving passengers, who said the damage was 'as if a bomb had been planted'.

Spain's Transport Minister Oscar Puente told reporters an 'inexplicable' order from a central command unit was to blame after a security system failed.

All trains on a stretch of 63km had been drawn to a halt due to the computer malfunction, but central command told a Renfe train to restart its journey without any speed restrictions.

A little more than 20 minutes later at 8.53am, it smashed into the back of the stationary Iryo train 100 miles south of Madrid, leaving carriages totally destroyed and derailed. It was reported that the locomotive was capable of travelling at speeds of 185mph.

Mr Puente said the control centre 'had more than enough time to verify the error, and they did not fix it.'

He added: 'The decision to resume traffic, while that system had not been restored, belongs to the control centre.'

Sixty-eight people died and more than 100 suffered injuries on Wednesday when two trains collided in Spain

The crash occurred shortly before 9am near the city of Toledo

The tragedy came less than a year after 46 people died in January when a train jumped the track and hit an incoming one in southern Spain.

That smash raised widespread concern about the safety of the nation's railways, with Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez declaring the situation 'not acceptable' following Wednesday's incident.

He said Spain would observe three days of mourning beginning today, while opposition leader Alberto Nunez Feijoo suspended campaigning but said: 'Spain has the right to know what is going on with its infrastructure.'

Surviving passengers described horrific scenes following the crash yesterday morning.

Sebastian Herrero, 46, who was travelling on the Iryo train, said he was 'thrown against the seats' when the trains collided, and described how he was 'in the air for about four or five seconds', which felt like 'a lifetime'.

He added: 'There are three carriages of the Iryo, the three at the end, from which they keep taking people out and putting sheets on them. Corpses. It's apocalyptic.

'In those carriages, I find it very hard to believe there are any living people. It's a twisted mass of metal. It's as if they had planted a bomb.'

A survivor named Jesus said: 'I saw a boy with an amputated arm walking away from the wreckage.'

Architect Joaquín Torres described the death of a horrifically injured fellow passenger.

He said: 'I went up to a woman who said she was cold... she died in my arms. It was horrible, [she was] without legs, without arms.'

One carriage caught fire and smoke was still pouring from the mangled wreckage as emergency responders reached the scene. It emerged last night that Fatima Banez, Spain's former employment minister, was among the dead.

Horrifying photographs showed a carriage impaled on a long steel rail that was forced through the floor and out of the roof.

Rail operator Adif said the incident occurred between the towns of Mora and Orgaz

Others showed passengers climbing out of twisted, broken carriages. David Gomez, a construction worker, was on a job with his brother and a colleague nearby when they heard the crash and ran to help.

'People were trying to get out through the windows. We cut through some fences to access the area and treated people with first-aid kits we brought,' he said. 'As I was trying to pull a young woman out, there was a piece of a leg.'

One survivor said his carriage was 'completely wrecked', adding: 'The impact was tremendous.

'The carriage was completely destroyed. A man fell on top of me, but we were able to help him. It was a very dramatic scene.'

Another passenger said she was left 'spinning on the floor' by the impact.

Miguel, a passenger travelling with colleagues in the rear car of one of the trains, said: 'We heard a massive roar... that went on for ten seconds, as if the train were about to derail.

'Through the right-hand window, we could see a wrecked train – it must have been the other one.'

The crash came the day before a 24-hour work stoppage at Renfe by Spain's biggest train drivers' union.

Earlier this month, the union said: 'Our goal is to change the system and make it safer. We demand real and definitive technical solutions to the safety and reliability issues that have long plagued our rolling stock.'

Speaking from the crash site, Prime Minister Sanchez said: 'The whole of Spain is grieving,' before adding that the authorities would determine the cause of the accident and take action if wrongdoing is uncovered.

He added: 'If there has been negligence, it will be known.'

Questions are continuing to mount over Bill Belichick and Jordon Hudson's secret split after the high-profile pair appeared to continue flaunting their relationship – months after supposedly calling it a day.

A bombshell TMZ report on Friday night revealed the age-gap romance came to an end 'late last year,' with the pair somehow managing to keep their break-up a secret for almost a year.

Late on Friday night, a separate report from USA Today claimed that UNC staffers had been 'caught off-guard' by news of Belichick and Hudson's split, with two anonymous employees admitting they were 'not aware' of the relationship breaking down.

Hudson has still been a mainstay at North Carolina football games this season, appearing by Belichick's side through thick and thin, both in Chapel Hill and on the road – even as recently as this month.

Reports claim they are still 'close friends' and 'remain committed to their business partnerships,' with Hudson listed as a director for multiple companies. That is despite the outlet reporting that she has since moved on and has dated multiple men this year.

So why, then, is there a wealth of loved-up photos taken in 2026, given their supposed romantic split back in the latter stages of 2025?

As recently as this month, the cheerleader has been a constant presence at Belichick's side

The 'former' couple held hands at the Kentucky Derby in May, after their split back in 2025

At high-profile sporting events and in private moments, the Daily Mail has dug out a series of snaps that show all might not be exactly as it seems between the legendary football coach, 74, and the ex-girlfriend 49 years his junior.

Perhaps the most confusing display of public affection came back in May at the Kentucky Derby, supposedly up to six months after they had called time on their romance.

After flying Hudson out on a private jet to the historic horse racing event at Churchill Downs, a suited-and-booted Belichick held her by the hand as they walked on the course.

Doubling down, Hudson later posted two photos to her social media, alongside the caption: 'Not the first time we've trudged through the mud together,' complete with a pink love heart.

In the photos, the pair are beaming, with Belichick's shirt and tie closely matching Hudson's dress.

Another social media post from a month earlier raises yet more eyebrows, after Belichick took time out from his busy football schedule to support Hudson's own sporting endeavor.

Playing the role of doting boyfriend, Belichick cheered Hudson on at her US Worlds Trials, in which she and her 'Cheer Extreme Code Black' team were crowned champion.

In the aftermath, Hudson posted a selfie of the pair, labeling Belichick 'Bill the WAG' while he wore a t-shirt carrying the name of her cheer squad. The term WAG – short for 'wife and girlfriend' – seemingly hinted that their romance was going strong.

Shortly before that April adventure, Belichick and Hudson had spent time in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, attending a basketball game one night on campus.

While nothing was posted on social media by either of them, photographers captured the pair with their arms intertwined as they sat in the bleachers to watch the action.

This, it should be noted, occurred two months into 2026 and long after they had apparently ended their high-profile relationship.

In recent months, Hudson's Instagram account has been dormant, with no new posts in 25 weeks and the most recent photo dump being the loved-up Kentucky Derby appearance.

Despite no images from the source, Hudson has still been closely involved in Belichick's life, appearing in photos taken at at least three of UNC's games just this month.

A report late on Friday claimed UNC staffers had no idea the pair had split before TMZ's reveal

Fans have taken to calling Hudson the 'First Lady of UNC Football' due to her regular presence

Last time out, the Tar Heels lost in overtime to Syracuse, and Hudson was seen in multiple fan photos taking selfies on the sideline in a stylish pink suit.

In one post, she was labeled the 'First Lady of UNC Football' as she grinned for snaps with young supporters.

Seven days earlier, she traveled to Durham, North Carolina with the team for the rivalry game against Duke, which ended with a huge win for Belichick and his players.

At the end of the game, Hudson appeared to cozy up to Belichick as they laughed and walked down the tunnel together.

On October 3, meanwhile, she was again on the sideline again as UNC suffered a loss to No 5 ranked Notre Dame, also at Chapel Hill.

The Daily Mail has reached out to the pair for comment.
