Teacher reveals terrifying seconds before jumping castle tragedy killed six children in Australia - as inquest hears only four of eight tether points were pegged down

Winds on a primary school oval went from 'one to 1000' moments before a jumping castle tragedy that killed six children.

An inquest examining the deaths of students Addison Stewart, Chace Harrison, Jye Sheehan, Jalailah Jayne-Maree Jones, Peter Dodt and Zane Mellor resumed in Tasmania on Tuesday.

The kids, all aged 11 or 12, were enjoying end-of-year celebrations at Hillcrest Primary School, Devonport, in December 2021 when a dust devil picked up the castle and other inflatable objects.

The inquest also heard from an employee of the company that set up the equipment, who said he had never been shown an instruction manual and was given 'on-the-job' training.

Stephen Fenn, who taught some of the Year 5 and 6 children who died, was supervising near the castle when he felt the wind pick up.

Until then, it had been a sunny day with hardly a breeze.

'I turned around and I could see (the wind) swirling around,' the now-retired teacher said.

'As it got close, it increased a little bit and brought up a lot of dust and grass clippings.'

The short-lived whirlwind then hit.

Five of the six children killed at Hillcrest Primary School after a wind gust lifted a jumping castle and zorb balls (pictured L-R Zane Mellor, 12, Peter Dodt, 12, Addison Stewart, 11, Jye Sheehan, 12 ,Jalailah Jayne-Marie Jones, 12, and Chace Harrison, 11)

Winds on a primary school oval went from 'one to 1000' moments before a jumping castle tragedy that killed six children.

'It went from one to 1000 in a split second. To me it felt an awful lot more than 100km/h.

'It could have gone anywhere on that oval. It went straight for the jumping castle, it seemed like.'

The veteran teacher heard a 'whoosh' sound before seeing the jumping castle come down from the height of a telephone pole and land on the other side of the oval, he said.

He ran to help Jye Sheehan and saw several students lying on the oval, before going to hospital to identify bodies including Addison Stewart's.

'I didn't know she had passed away,' he said.

'That was... very confronting to see that little girl there.'

The tragedy forced Mr Fenn, who had taught at Hillcrest since 2000, into an early retirement.

He was unable to return to the classroom with the same care and love, he said.

It affected his mental health, caused depression and meant he was always on the lookout for danger.

The inquest, which began in September after delays due to criminal proceedings, is examining the causes of death, safety protocols and national standards.

Taz-Zorb worker Jesse Barrett, who helped set up the inflatable equipment, said he was never shown an instruction manual but was aware of sewn-on instructions on the castle.

Four pegs were used on the castle's eight tether points, he said.

Taz-Zorb operator Rosemary Gamble would sometimes require more than four pegs, depending on how hard or soft the ground was or whether it was slightly windy, he said.

It was fine, sunny and not windy in the lead-up to the tragedy, Mr Barrett said.

Ms Gamble, who will give evidence on Thursday, claims she was not given a manual by Chinese supplier East Inflatables but downloaded one from its website.

Ms Gamble was found not guilty in 2025 of criminal workplace safety breaches related to the incident.

Earlier, counsel assisting the coroner, Maree Norton, said the castle didn't meet the bar to require registration with workplace regulator WorkSafe Tasmania, and national standards lacked legal teeth.

The inquest continues.

Lively gave a glimpse into her cozy wind-down routine shortly after the drama involving her film It Ends With Us and her director and costar Justin Baldoni.

'Natural beauty is effortless,' she quipped at the bottom of her post, which pictured her taking a deep breath while the mask covered her face.

Lively also drew thought bubbles around her face, and in one, she wrote: 'If I don't look like I'm in the first trimester of life after this much effort I quit.'

She continued: 'I miss the 2000s when we just used that handsoap with fish characters on it on our face & called it a day.'

The Gossip Girl star also noted the lights in the background of her room in another thought bubble: 'My kids' star projector that I stole is a vibe tho.'

She set her candid post to the tune of Fergie and Ludacris' 2006 smash hit Glamorous.

'The look: no time but need to look cute while ALSO raising children,' the movie star, who was seen using products from her Blake Brown haircare brand, wrote over the clip.

'Moment of truth: bun out after running around the city,' she continued, before almost running out the door with her pants unbuttoned.

Her post comes after she was in a legal battle with Baldoni, and the former costars settled right before their trial was set to begin.

Baldoni was ultimately ordered to pay $400,000 of Lively's legal fees.

Lively previously sued Baldoni and his production company Wayfarer in December 2024.

Right before their trial was set to begin earlier this year, Lively was awarded just over $400,000 of the $8 million she sought in legal fees from their dispute due to his countersuit.

In her lawsuit, Lively asserted that she was subjected to sexual harassment as well as retaliation, alleging he orchestrated a smear campaign to harm her reputation after she brought up complaints about his behavior on set.

In response, Baldoni denied harassment and claimed Lively made complaints to seize creative control of the movie.

In June 2025, the countersuit was thrown out. In May of this year, just two weeks before the scheduled trial date, the former costars reached their settlement.

They also released a joint statement, writing that they 'remain firmly committed to workplaces free of improprieties and unproductive environments.'
