High-flying attorney, 49, is found dead on California mountain after he didn't check out of his hotel

High-flying attorney, 49, is found dead on California mountain after he didn't check out of his hotel

A successful California attorney was found dead near the summit of Mount Whitney after failing to check out of his hotel, triggering a desperate search that ended in tragedy.

Winston Chu, 49, a successful Silicon Valley patent lawyer, suffered fatal injuries after falling while tackling one of the most dangerous routes up the tallest mountain in the contiguous United States.

His body was spotted by a helicopter on October 20, but a powerful storm brought snow and treacherous conditions that prevented rescuers from reaching him for another five days.

The alarm was first raised on October 19 when staff at a motel in Lone Pine, a small town at the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountains, became concerned after Chu missed his scheduled checkout.

The Santa Clara resident had left his personal belongings behind and told employees he planned to hike in the Mount Whitney area.

It was when he failed to return that staff contacted the Inyo County Sheriff's Office, setting off a search for the missing attorney.

Investigators repeatedly tried to contact Chu, but their attempts went unanswered.

Deputies subsequently located his vehicle at Whitney Portal, a popular starting point for climbers attempting to scale the towering 14,505-foot mountain.

The body of Winston Chu, center, was discovered at approximately 13,600 feet, less than 1,000 vertical feet below the summit of Mount Whitney in California

A California Highway Patrol helicopter was dispatched to search the rugged terrain and spotted Chu along the notorious Mountaineer's Route on October 20.

The discovery was just the beginning of a grueling recovery operation.

A storm system had moved into the area, dumping snow across the mountain creating hazardous conditions that made reaching his body too dangerous.

'Recovery efforts were delayed due to a storm system that brought snow and hazardous weather conditions,' the Inyo County Sheriff's Office said.

It was not until October 25 that a CHP helicopter and members of the Inyo County Search and Rescue team were finally able to recover Chu's remains from an elevation of around 13,600 feet.

It meant the attorney was found less than 1,000 vertical feet below Mount Whitney's summit.

The Inyo County Coroner's Office subsequently determined that Chu died from multiple traumatic injuries caused by a fall.

Authorities have not disclosed precisely when he fell or what caused him to lose his footing. His family has been notified of his death.

Chu had built a successful legal career after graduating from Georgetown University Law Center in 2006.

Towering 14,505 feet above sea level, Mount Whitney is the highest mountain in the contiguous United States

He spent more than eight years working as a patent attorney at Roche Molecular Solutions in Santa Clara, according to his LinkedIn profile.

The company is part of Roche Diagnostics, a major biotechnology and medical diagnostics business involved in developing technologies used to detect and diagnose diseases.

Mount Whitney, which straddles California's Sierra Nevada range, attracts climbers from around the country hoping to reach the highest point in the lower 48 states.

But reaching its summit can be extremely dangerous, particularly for those attempting the more technically demanding Mountaineer's Route.

Unlike the mountain's main hiking trail, which follows a longer route to the summit, the Mountaineer's Route climbs steeply up the eastern side of the peak.

It is a punishing 9.4-mile round trip featuring loose rocks, exposed slopes and sections that can become covered in ice and snow.

Hikers face the additional challenge of operating at extreme altitude, where reduced oxygen levels can affect physical performance and judgment.

The treacherous Mountaineer's Route features steep cliffs, loose rocks and icy slopes, making it one of the most demanding ways to climb Mount Whitney

According to AllTrails, the route is suitable for climbers with 'strong mountaineering skills, navigation experience, and appropriate gear.'

The alternative Mount Whitney Trail is approximately 21.7 miles round-trip and involves more than 6,000 feet of elevation gain.

Although less technically demanding, it also presents significant challenges because of its length, altitude, and unpredictable mountain weather.

Conditions on Mount Whitney can deteriorate rapidly, with climbers exposed to freezing temperatures, storms, and potentially deadly falls.

Lively gave a glimpse into her cozy wind-down routine shortly after the drama involving her film It Ends With Us and her director and costar Justin Baldoni.

'Natural beauty is effortless,' she quipped at the bottom of her post, which pictured her taking a deep breath while the mask covered her face.

Lively also drew thought bubbles around her face, and in one, she wrote: 'If I don't look like I'm in the first trimester of life after this much effort I quit.'

She continued: 'I miss the 2000s when we just used that handsoap with fish characters on it on our face & called it a day.'

The Gossip Girl star also noted the lights in the background of her room in another thought bubble: 'My kids' star projector that I stole is a vibe tho.'

She set her candid post to the tune of Fergie and Ludacris' 2006 smash hit Glamorous.

'The look: no time but need to look cute while ALSO raising children,' the movie star, who was seen using products from her Blake Brown haircare brand, wrote over the clip.

'Moment of truth: bun out after running around the city,' she continued, before almost running out the door with her pants unbuttoned.

Her post comes after she was in a legal battle with Baldoni, and the former costars settled right before their trial was set to begin.

Baldoni was ultimately ordered to pay $400,000 of Lively's legal fees.

Lively previously sued Baldoni and his production company Wayfarer in December 2024.

Right before their trial was set to begin earlier this year, Lively was awarded just over $400,000 of the $8 million she sought in legal fees from their dispute due to his countersuit.

In her lawsuit, Lively asserted that she was subjected to sexual harassment as well as retaliation, alleging he orchestrated a smear campaign to harm her reputation after she brought up complaints about his behavior on set.

In response, Baldoni denied harassment and claimed Lively made complaints to seize creative control of the movie.

In June 2025, the countersuit was thrown out. In May of this year, just two weeks before the scheduled trial date, the former costars reached their settlement.

They also released a joint statement, writing that they 'remain firmly committed to workplaces free of improprieties and unproductive environments.'
