The Abia State Police Command has presented cheques totalling N9,054,644.57 to the families of 21 deceased officers under the Group Life Assurance and Inspector-General of Police Family Welfare Scheme.
The state Commissioner of Police, Afolabi Wilfred, presented the cheques on behalf of the Inspector-General of Police during a brief ceremony at the command headquarters in Umuahia on Friday.
Speaking at the event, Wilfred expressed condolences to the bereaved families, noting that no amount of money could replace their loved ones or fill the vacuum created by their death.
He said the gesture demonstrated the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to the welfare of its personnel and its continued support for their families, even after their death.
He said, “Today, we are presenting a total of 21 cheques under the Group Life Assurance and IGP Family Welfare Scheme, amounting to N9,054,644.57, for onward transmission to the families of our deceased officers.
“I encourage the beneficiaries to see this as an institutional commitment and a demonstration that the sacrifices of our fallen colleagues are not forgotten. The Nigeria Police Force remains conscious of its responsibility towards the families they left behind.”
Wilfred prayed that God would grant the families the strength to bear their loss, comfort them and grant the departed officers eternal rest.
In her remarks, Mrs Oyebuchi Gloria, wife of the late Inspector Oyebuchi Henry Ndemeka, thanked the Nigeria Police Force and the Abia State Command for the gesture.
She said the cheque she received would go a long way in supporting her and her children.
“Although this cheque cannot be compared to the life of my husband, on behalf of my family, I want to say thank you. Thank you to the Nigeria Police Force, thank you to the CP, and thank you to Abia State Police Command. I pray that God will bless each and every one of you and none of you will cry,” she said.
Another beneficiary also thanked the Federal Government and the Nigeria Police Force, saying no amount of money could replace the love of her late husband, both as an officer and as a father to her children.
