This Budget could be even worse than the two bloodbaths delivered by Reeves, Kemi Badenoch warns

This Budget could be even worse than the two bloodbaths delivered by Reeves, Kemi Badenoch warns

John Healey's maiden Budget risks being even worse than the two delivered by Rachel Reeves, Kemi Badenoch will warn today.

The Tory leader raises the prospect that the Chancellor will cause more damage to the economy than his predecessor, despite Labour already hiking the tax burden to a post-war high.

In a speech, Mrs Badenoch will say that although he may wish to 'bury his head in the sand' and not make any major changes to taxation and spending, Mr Healey needs to slash expenditure so the Government can live within its means.

And she will brand Labour's current proposals for public spending cuts to balance the books 'fictional', predicting that Andy Burnham will call an early general election before they have to be delivered.

Speaking in London, the Leader of the Opposition is expected to say: 'John Healey is not Rachel Reeves. Many people see that as an improvement. How could it be worse than £70billion in new tax rises across just two Budgets? However, I'm worried that next week John Healey will deliver a Budget that does more damage to our country than either of Rachel Reeves's did.'

She will say that while the talk in Westminster and Whitehall is of a 'nothing to see here' statement next Wednesday, Britain 'cannot afford to do as little as possible'.

Although the International Monetary Fund (IMF) last week hailed Labour's plan to narrow the Budget deficit – the shortfall between spending and revenue – the Tory leader will say it is based on 'made-up spending cuts'.

'Labour's deficit reduction plans to meet their fiscal rules are predicated on making huge cuts to the public sector in the final year of the spending period. I think there will be an election before then and they'll never have to prove it,' she will say.

The speech will follow Mrs Badenoch's recent trip to Scotland. She is pictured here (left to right) with shadow Scotland secretary Harriet Cross, Scottish Conservative leader Russell Findlay and shadow transport secretary Richard Holden

'Labour have increased spending by more than £100billion in just two-and-a-bit years. They are not suddenly going to find some courage to cut spending in the final year of a Parliament right before an election.'

She will highlight a recent warning by the Institute for Fiscal Studies that Mr Healey's Budget risks being a 'work of fiction' unless he spells out spending cuts.

The think-tank said that if the Chancellor wants to increase military spending – the issue which saw him quit as Sir Keir Starmer's defence secretary – and avoid squeezing departmental budgets, then he must impose tax rises or welfare cuts of £35billion.

Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey has also said the Budget must be 'credible' to reassure financial markets, after Government borrowing costs reached their highest level since 1998.

Mrs Badenoch will acknowledge that the wars in Ukraine and Iran have pushed up bond yields around the world, but will point out that the UK is paying more to borrow than the other leading economies in the G7.

'We have to stop borrowing so much,' she will say. 'But instead of doing that, Labour are taking out loans to pay the interest on our loans.'

She will urge the Government to bring spending down, pointing out her party has identified more than £70billion of cuts that could be implemented straight away.

It is thought that Mr Healey will try to avoid spooking the markets by leaving about £15billion in fiscal headroom, the buffer against future events, down from the £23billion left by Ms Reeves.

His Budget is expected to include support to help poorer households with soaring energy bills this winter, while the long-standing freeze in fuel duty will be extended.

A tax raid on banks has been predicted, even though the Chancellor described them as a 'jewel in the British economic crown' at an IMF summit in Bangkok last week.

On Monday, it emerged that Mr Healey is also looking at a mechanism used to pass down family businesses.

He may levy income tax on retiring entrepreneurs when they convert their holdings into 'redeemable shares', rather than Capital Gains Tax as at present.

It would mean a business owner paying up to £450,000 on a £1million company, rather than £240,000 under the current system.

However the Budget is not expected to include any new funding for the Prime Minister's plans to tackle the youth unemployment crisis.

A Labour spokesman said of Mrs Badenoch's speech: 'The Conservatives have zero credibility on the economy. After appointing the architect of the economy-crashing mini-Budget [Andrew Griffith] as her Shadow Chancellor, Kemi Badenoch should spare everyone the lecture.'

Questions are continuing to mount over Bill Belichick and Jordon Hudson's secret split after the high-profile pair appeared to continue flaunting their relationship – months after supposedly calling it a day.

A bombshell TMZ report on Friday night revealed the age-gap romance came to an end 'late last year,' with the pair somehow managing to keep their break-up a secret for almost a year.

Late on Friday night, a separate report from USA Today claimed that UNC staffers had been 'caught off-guard' by news of Belichick and Hudson's split, with two anonymous employees admitting they were 'not aware' of the relationship breaking down.

Hudson has still been a mainstay at North Carolina football games this season, appearing by Belichick's side through thick and thin, both in Chapel Hill and on the road – even as recently as this month.

Reports claim they are still 'close friends' and 'remain committed to their business partnerships,' with Hudson listed as a director for multiple companies. That is despite the outlet reporting that she has since moved on and has dated multiple men this year.

So why, then, is there a wealth of loved-up photos taken in 2026, given their supposed romantic split back in the latter stages of 2025?

As recently as this month, the cheerleader has been a constant presence at Belichick's side

The 'former' couple held hands at the Kentucky Derby in May, after their split back in 2025

At high-profile sporting events and in private moments, the Daily Mail has dug out a series of snaps that show all might not be exactly as it seems between the legendary football coach, 74, and the ex-girlfriend 49 years his junior.

Perhaps the most confusing display of public affection came back in May at the Kentucky Derby, supposedly up to six months after they had called time on their romance.

After flying Hudson out on a private jet to the historic horse racing event at Churchill Downs, a suited-and-booted Belichick held her by the hand as they walked on the course.

Doubling down, Hudson later posted two photos to her social media, alongside the caption: 'Not the first time we've trudged through the mud together,' complete with a pink love heart.

In the photos, the pair are beaming, with Belichick's shirt and tie closely matching Hudson's dress.

Another social media post from a month earlier raises yet more eyebrows, after Belichick took time out from his busy football schedule to support Hudson's own sporting endeavor.

Playing the role of doting boyfriend, Belichick cheered Hudson on at her US Worlds Trials, in which she and her 'Cheer Extreme Code Black' team were crowned champion.

In the aftermath, Hudson posted a selfie of the pair, labeling Belichick 'Bill the WAG' while he wore a t-shirt carrying the name of her cheer squad. The term WAG – short for 'wife and girlfriend' – seemingly hinted that their romance was going strong.

Shortly before that April adventure, Belichick and Hudson had spent time in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, attending a basketball game one night on campus.

While nothing was posted on social media by either of them, photographers captured the pair with their arms intertwined as they sat in the bleachers to watch the action.

This, it should be noted, occurred two months into 2026 and long after they had apparently ended their high-profile relationship.

In recent months, Hudson's Instagram account has been dormant, with no new posts in 25 weeks and the most recent photo dump being the loved-up Kentucky Derby appearance.

Despite no images from the source, Hudson has still been closely involved in Belichick's life, appearing in photos taken at at least three of UNC's games just this month.

A report late on Friday claimed UNC staffers had no idea the pair had split before TMZ's reveal

Fans have taken to calling Hudson the 'First Lady of UNC Football' due to her regular presence

Last time out, the Tar Heels lost in overtime to Syracuse, and Hudson was seen in multiple fan photos taking selfies on the sideline in a stylish pink suit.

In one post, she was labeled the 'First Lady of UNC Football' as she grinned for snaps with young supporters.

Seven days earlier, she traveled to Durham, North Carolina with the team for the rivalry game against Duke, which ended with a huge win for Belichick and his players.

At the end of the game, Hudson appeared to cozy up to Belichick as they laughed and walked down the tunnel together.

On October 3, meanwhile, she was again on the sideline again as UNC suffered a loss to No 5 ranked Notre Dame, also at Chapel Hill.

The Daily Mail has reached out to the pair for comment.
