Akume Berates Atiku, Says Former VP’s Presidential Ambition Could Hurt North’s Interests – THISDAYLIVE

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has criticised former Vice President Atiku Abubakar over his ambition to contest the 2027 presidential election.
The former governor of Benue State described the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as a pretender and warned that the move could undermine the collective political interests of Northern Nigeria.
Akume spoke yesterday in Kaduna with gloves in his hands, at a pre-campaign meeting with Benue State indigenes resident in the state.
He urged northerners to rally behind President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid, insisting that the region should wait until 2031 before seeking to return to the presidency.
The SGF argued that individual presidential ambitions should not be allowed to disrupt the power-rotation arrangement between the North and South, which he said had helped sustain Nigeria’s unity and territorial integrity.
“Anybody who is from the North and running for the presidency is an enemy of the North. Don’t allow that pretender to deceive you. It is not yet our turn. The North’s turn is in 2031. Prepare to vote for Tinubu. Do not allow anyone to destroy the country because of a vaunting personal ambition,” he said.
Akume maintained that the North stood to gain more by supporting Tinubu for a second term than by pursuing competing political ambitions that could divide the region and weaken its collective influence ahead of the next general election.
He also defended the president’s record on political appointments and religious inclusiveness, urging northerners not to be swayed by what he described as misleading narratives about the administration.
“Let us remember that the president has been fair to all in terms of appointments and others. He doesn’t favour one religion over the other. Just look at the figures. So be careful about what people tell you,” Akume said.
The former Benue State governor further faulted Atiku’s position on fuel subsidy, accusing the former vice-president of inconsistency.
“Forget that other one making noise that he was going to remove fuel subsidies. He is always flip-flopping. He says something today and changes gear the next minute,” he said.
Akume argued that the political understanding reached by Nigerian leaders on the rotation of presidential power should remain a guiding principle in managing the country’s political differences.
He recalled that the agreement reached in Kaduna was designed to preserve national cohesion and ensure a sense of inclusion among the country’s diverse political constituencies.
“Remember that it was in this same Kaduna State that we agreed on power rotation between the North and the South. You cannot doubt the credentials of those that reached this agreement at that time, and it was done to keep this country together. We agreed on a power shift, and that is what has kept this country going,” he said.
Akume also cited federal government projects in Benue State, covering healthcare, roads and education, as evidence of Tinubu’s commitment to the state.

Jobberman Nigeria, Nigeria’s leading career development and recruitment solutions company, has launched ‘Her Next Move’, a campaign designed to empower young Nigerian women with practical skills and confidence to pursue career opportunities and participate more fully in the workforce.
Through free online training, the initiative supports women aged 18 to 35 as they prepare to enter the workplace, advance into better roles or explore freelance and gig work.
Built around the message ‘Your Future. Your Skills. Your Move’, the campaign places female inclusion at the centre of career development, encouraging women to take an active role in shaping their professional futures. It connects the ambition to progress with an accessible starting point: learning skills that can help women prepare for their next opportunity.
‘Her Next Move’ recognises that career progress looks different for every woman. For a graduate, it may mean preparing for a first job. For a woman already working, it may involve developing the skills to take on greater responsibility or pursue a new role. For another, it may mean understanding how to navigate freelance work and participate in the global gig economy. The campaign brings these aspirations together through a shared emphasis on learning, preparation and action.
This Initiative by Jobberman in partnership with Mastercard Foundation promotes two courses: Jobberman Soft Skills Training and Becoming a Successful Global Gig Worker. Both courses are free, with a free certificate upon successful completion.
Jobberman Soft Skills Training focuses on workplace readiness, helping participants build the professional skills needed to navigate work and prepare for career progression. Becoming a Successful Global Gig Worker introduces participants to the demands and opportunities of freelance and gig work, supporting women interested in exploring career paths beyond traditional employment.
By making the training and certification available at no cost, ‘Her Next Move’ reduces the financial barrier to participation and encourages more young women to invest in their professional development. Its focus extends from raising awareness of learning opportunities to helping participants follow through and complete their chosen course.
To bring the campaign to life, Jobberman is working with young creators who are sharing personal stories about ambition, career transitions and the role of learning in their journeys. Through videos, social media posts and follow-up conversations, the creators encourage young women to reflect on their own goals and identify the practical steps they can take towards them.
These stories are intended to make career development relatable, connecting everyday aspirations with opportunities to learn. Across the campaign, the question “What is your next move?” invites women to define progress for themselves and begin preparing for it.
‘Her Next Move’ reinforces Jobberman’s and Mastercard Foundation’s commitment to supporting career development and expanding access to learning for young Nigerian women. By combining free skills training with relatable storytelling and encouragement to take action, the campaign seeks to help more women feel prepared to pursue their ambitions.
