Oliseh: I signed Juventus contract at the airport

I signed Juventus contract at the airport

Former Super Eagles midfielder Sunday Oliseh has revealed how Italian giants Juventus beat AS Roma to secure his signature in the summer of 1999.

The former Nigeria international joined the Old Lady following an impressive campaign with Eredivisie giants Ajax, where he enjoyed considerable success.

Despite Roma reaching an agreement with Ajax over his transfer to the Stadio Olimpico, Juventus intervened at the last minute to secure his services.

Speaking on the Play Zone Podcast, Oliseh explained that Juventus won the race for his signature after presenting an offer he could not refuse.

“They had to wrestle me off the hands of Roma because {Fabio} Capello wants me at Roma,” Oliseh explained. “I was supposed to sign for Roma. They had made every agreement with Ajax.”

“Two days before I was supposed to fly there, Juventus flew in and invited me to the airport in Amsterdam, and Juventus put an offer I couldn’t refuse, and we signed at the airport.”

Oliseh added that Juventus signed him to replace former France international Didier Deschamps following his successful spell at Ajax.

“I was brought in to replace Didier Deshamp. I just had an exceptional time at Ajax, where we won everything.”

However, the former Super Eagles captain admitted that his time at Juventus was difficult, describing it as the only club he did not enjoy playing for during his career.

“Except for one club, that was Juventus, and that’s the only club I didn’t like playing for. As at that time, I was the only and probably the first African to play in that club,” he revealed.
