George Michael's Faith guitar sells for £234,000 after his personal assistant's estranged husband put it up for auction following her death

George Michael's Faith guitar sells for £234,000 after his personal assistant's estranged husband put it up for auction following her death

George Michael's guitar from his Faith video has sold for £234,000 after a family row broke out about its auction.

The singer donated the guitar to his long-term personal assistant Siobhan Bailey. It was put up for auction by her estranged husband Ian Belcher, who inherited it after she died in 2014.

They were in the process of getting divorced when she died, her brother Gerard Bailey said, but had not written a will.

Mr Bailey told the BBC she 'would be horrified at the prospect of the auction being held in her name and that her personal, cherished possessions are being sold off to the highest bidder'.

She had started to draw up a will shortly before her death, Mr Bailey claimed, with the intention to leave the items to her nieces and nephews, but it was not registered.

The guitar, which was valued at £60,000 to £120,000, came with its original Gretsch case.

It achieved a hammer price of £180,000, with the UK-based buyer paying £234,480 after auctioneer's fees.

A number of signed photographs to Siobhan, the singer's running order for Live Aid and an annotated itinerary from Wham!'s 1985 China tour also made up part of the auction.

The guitar up for sale was given as 'a gift' to his sister because Michael 'thought so much of her', Siobhan's brother Gerard Bailey said

It is not suggested that Mr Belcher doesn't have the right to sell the items, but Mr Bailey said that if his sister had lived for a few weeks longer, the items would not have been passed on to Mr Belcher.

Labelling it 'disingenuous' that the sale was being promoted in her name, Mr Bailey has asked that if the auction goes ahead, it should be in Mr Belcher's name.

He said that Siobhan would have wanted the memorabilia to 'have remained with her family and we would never have sold' and accused Mr Belcher of deciding '12 years after my sister's death to cash in'.

Mr Bailey said: 'I think she was one of the few people George trusted and whose opinion he valued.

'She was always honest and straight with him. I guess that's why she stayed working for him for so long through the very, very good and not so good times.'

The star played the Gretsch Synchromatic 160 guitar in the video to the 1987 hit song, which sold more than 25million copies worldwide.

A Sworders spokesperson said after the sale: 'This auction provided a unique insight into the working life of a music legend and attracted attention and adoration from around the globe.

'The Gretsch Synchromatic guitar was the "jewel in the crown", a fitting offering ahead of the 40th anniversary of the release of Faith and a chance to own a small piece of pop history.'

Mr Belcher declined to comment when approached by the BBC.

A spokesman for Sworders said: 'We are not well placed to comment on a family matter, but such disputes are not uncommon in the auction business.

'In this case, as the BBC article makes clear, the legal title of the collection is not in question.'
