Scores of American tourists dumped in sketchy Cambodian town after cruise line that sold them $440k 15-year world trip suspended business and kicked them off ship

Americans reveal nightmare of being kicked off $440k, 15-year dream cruise in Cambodia with just seven hours' notice: 'We are homeless'

Dozens of American passengers have been left stranded in Cambodia after the company running their 15-year-long cruise around the world abruptly suspended business.

Hundreds of people aboard the Ville Vie Odyssey, which is owned by Florida-based Villa Vie Residences, have been left abandoned in Sihanoukville, the Daily Mail can reveal.

Among those on board is Randy Cassingham, who is from California and writes about cruises on his website Residentialcruising.com.

The former NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory employee, who is on board with his wife Kit, wrote a post titled 'Abandon Ship!' in which they said residents were given just seven hours' notice to leave - with all their belongings.

On cruise ship forums, residents and former residents fumed at the 'floating disaster' and posted pictures of grim-looking buildings in Sihanoukville, where they had been marooned.

In an official statement, Villa Vie Residences blamed the high cost of fuel due to the Iran War for the decision.

This has created 'unsustainable financial pressure', and the company will seek additional funding over the next 60 days.

Launched in 2024, the 720-capacity Villa Vie Odyssey promised a 'new model of global living at sea' by allowing residents to live on board for months or years at a time.

Randy Cassingham and his wife Kit (pictured together) were on board the cruise ship when they were suddenly alerted that they had to get off on Monday morning

Dubbed 'The First Perpetual World Cruise', the voyage was due to last 15 years and cost up to $440,000 per cabin to visit 147 countries around the world.

One key advantage of being on the ship is that residents did not have to pay any property or state taxes, though they still had to pay federal income tax.

According to Cassingham, the news of the eviction arrived around 7am Eastern time on Monday, October 26.

Posted on the internal messaging board by Villa Vie chief executive Kathy Villaba, it read: 'Good morning, everyone.

'Unfortunately, we were unable to secure the fuel necessary to continue operations. As a result, the Odyssey will enter a temporary layup this afternoon, with crew remaining onboard to maintain the vessel and its essential systems.

'All residents must disembark by 2pm today'.

Anyone who was unable to remove all of their belongings had to speak to guest services and coordinate an 'orderly return' to take them away.

Cassingham wrote that residents on the Odyssey had been 'well aware of the problems' on board and the announcement 'didn't come out of the blue'.

Cassingham shared an image that he took of a building in Sihanoukville, and captioned it with a comment his wife made after they were left there. 'This is the picture of my new life - a shell that I get to build into something new and exciting. The Odyssey has reached the end of its sailing days - at least for now. It abandoned us in Cambodia,' Kit stated

He said it was a 'cascade of problems piling up on one another, from the business model to mistakes by management to the mentioned crisis in fuel cost and availability, and more'.

Cassingham also criticized Villalba for failing to apologize and said: 'She's the freaking CEO, and couldn't bring herself to say it'.

He also shared an image that he took of a building in Sihanoukville, and captioned it with a comment his wife made after they were left there.

'It abandoned us in Cambodia,' Kit stated.

Shirene Thomas, who is from Madison, Wisconsin, wrote on Facebook that she had been left 'homeless' by Villa Vie stopping business.

'This time in Cambodia,' she said.

'Note that as per usual Villa Vie has put their spin on things; they are offering no help with lodging, travel arrangements or anything'.

According to Thomas, she was 'evicted' at 2pm on Monday.

She wrote: 'They told us at 6.30am!'

In the message to residents, Villaba said that was all the information they had at the time, but the following day Villa Vie put out a statement explaining the 'temporary layup' was far more serious.

The company said that fuel costs had 'risen sharply' in Asia, and per cabin, their expenses had risen from $1,800 a month to between $6,000 and $8,000.

'The company cannot simply pass increases of that scale on to residents, and the resulting shortfall has placed its current operating model under unsustainable financial pressure,' the release said.

Villa Vie was 'working with residents to identify temporary accommodation', and acknowledged it was 'a difficult and disruptive period' for the passengers and crew.

According to Villa Vie, they had already taken 'significant steps' to reduce fuel consumption, like slowing the itinerary and spending more time in port.

'Our focus now is on supporting residents, crew, and employees while we work toward restructuring and recapitalization over the next 60 days,' the company said.

Around 200 passengers who paid to live on a cruise ship while travelling the world were abruptly left in a Cambodian port after the company ran out of money, an official said

On Facebook, crew members told how they were 'heartbroken' at the news, including Lucas Clyne.

He wrote: 'As a crew member of Villa Vie Residences, it hurts to see residents leaving the place they have called home.

'For many people, this is not just a ship or a place to live. It is a home filled with memories, friendships, laughter, and moments that have become part of our lives'.

Before its launch, the ship, formerly known as MS Braemar, was described by Villa Vis founder Mikael Petterson as 'rethinking how we live' rather than a vacation.

He talked about how residents had a 'sense of freedom and community that's hard to find anywhere else' and how they could 'explore the world without leaving home'.

But problems began before it even set off in May 2024 from Belfast in Northern Ireland, when the maiden voyage was delayed by four months due to repairs and inspections.

Earlier this summer, Villa Vie was so bullish about its business it announced the launch of the Legacy, a sister ship to the Odyssey, which was due to sail in 2029.

At the time, Petterson claimed that 85 percent of the cabins on Odyssey had been sold.

The cruise was all-inclusive, meaning guests had meals, wine and beer free.

Housekeeping was every other week.

Questions are continuing to mount over Bill Belichick and Jordon Hudson's secret split after the high-profile pair appeared to continue flaunting their relationship – months after supposedly calling it a day.

A bombshell TMZ report on Friday night revealed the age-gap romance came to an end 'late last year,' with the pair somehow managing to keep their break-up a secret for almost a year.

Late on Friday night, a separate report from USA Today claimed that UNC staffers had been 'caught off-guard' by news of Belichick and Hudson's split, with two anonymous employees admitting they were 'not aware' of the relationship breaking down.

Hudson has still been a mainstay at North Carolina football games this season, appearing by Belichick's side through thick and thin, both in Chapel Hill and on the road – even as recently as this month.

Reports claim they are still 'close friends' and 'remain committed to their business partnerships,' with Hudson listed as a director for multiple companies. That is despite the outlet reporting that she has since moved on and has dated multiple men this year.

So why, then, is there a wealth of loved-up photos taken in 2026, given their supposed romantic split back in the latter stages of 2025?

As recently as this month, the cheerleader has been a constant presence at Belichick's side

The 'former' couple held hands at the Kentucky Derby in May, after their split back in 2025

At high-profile sporting events and in private moments, the Daily Mail has dug out a series of snaps that show all might not be exactly as it seems between the legendary football coach, 74, and the ex-girlfriend 49 years his junior.

Perhaps the most confusing display of public affection came back in May at the Kentucky Derby, supposedly up to six months after they had called time on their romance.

After flying Hudson out on a private jet to the historic horse racing event at Churchill Downs, a suited-and-booted Belichick held her by the hand as they walked on the course.

Doubling down, Hudson later posted two photos to her social media, alongside the caption: 'Not the first time we've trudged through the mud together,' complete with a pink love heart.

In the photos, the pair are beaming, with Belichick's shirt and tie closely matching Hudson's dress.

Another social media post from a month earlier raises yet more eyebrows, after Belichick took time out from his busy football schedule to support Hudson's own sporting endeavor.

Playing the role of doting boyfriend, Belichick cheered Hudson on at her US Worlds Trials, in which she and her 'Cheer Extreme Code Black' team were crowned champion.

In the aftermath, Hudson posted a selfie of the pair, labeling Belichick 'Bill the WAG' while he wore a t-shirt carrying the name of her cheer squad. The term WAG – short for 'wife and girlfriend' – seemingly hinted that their romance was going strong.

Shortly before that April adventure, Belichick and Hudson had spent time in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, attending a basketball game one night on campus.

While nothing was posted on social media by either of them, photographers captured the pair with their arms intertwined as they sat in the bleachers to watch the action.

This, it should be noted, occurred two months into 2026 and long after they had apparently ended their high-profile relationship.

In recent months, Hudson's Instagram account has been dormant, with no new posts in 25 weeks and the most recent photo dump being the loved-up Kentucky Derby appearance.

Despite no images from the source, Hudson has still been closely involved in Belichick's life, appearing in photos taken at at least three of UNC's games just this month.

A report late on Friday claimed UNC staffers had no idea the pair had split before TMZ's reveal

Fans have taken to calling Hudson the 'First Lady of UNC Football' due to her regular presence

Last time out, the Tar Heels lost in overtime to Syracuse, and Hudson was seen in multiple fan photos taking selfies on the sideline in a stylish pink suit.

In one post, she was labeled the 'First Lady of UNC Football' as she grinned for snaps with young supporters.

Seven days earlier, she traveled to Durham, North Carolina with the team for the rivalry game against Duke, which ended with a huge win for Belichick and his players.

At the end of the game, Hudson appeared to cozy up to Belichick as they laughed and walked down the tunnel together.

On October 3, meanwhile, she was again on the sideline again as UNC suffered a loss to No 5 ranked Notre Dame, also at Chapel Hill.

The Daily Mail has reached out to the pair for comment.
