Manchester United staged a remarkable second-half comeback to defeat Roma 3–2 at Old Trafford, while Bayern Munich and Barcelona also recorded victories in Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League fixtures.
United overturned a two-goal deficit to secure all three points after Matheus Cunha scored twice late in the encounter, ending the visitors’ hopes of a memorable away victory.
Roma took an early lead in the 11th minute through Matías Soulé before Donyell Malen doubled their advantage from the penalty spot seven minutes later.
The visitors went into the break with a comfortable 2–0 lead, leaving United with a difficult task in the second half.
However, Bruno Fernandes reduced the deficit in the 58th minute with a penalty after an initial attempt was saved and ordered to be retaken following encroachment.
Cunha then brought United level in the 83rd minute before completing the turnaround three minutes later to give the hosts a 3–2 lead.
The Brazilian’s night ended on a sour note, however, as he was sent off after receiving a second yellow card in stoppage time.
The victory provided relief for manager Michael Carrick, whose side had been under pressure following a difficult run of results.
In Madrid, Bayern Munich defeated Atletico Madrid 2–0 to strengthen their position in the competition.
Eighteen-year-old Lennart Karl opened the scoring in the 54th minute, finishing after winning possession inside the penalty area and lifting the ball over goalkeeper Jan Oblak.
Konrad Laimer sealed the victory in the 74th minute with a powerful finish, ensuring the German champions returned home with all three points.
The result maintained Bayern’s unbeaten run in the competition after their previous two draws.
Meanwhile, Barcelona defeated Aston Villa 3–0 at Camp Nou, with Lamine Yamal and Raphinha providing the goals.
Yamal opened the scoring in the seventh minute after capitalising on a defensive error, giving the hosts an early advantage.
Raphinha doubled Barcelona’s lead in the 52nd minute before completing his brace in the 64th minute following an assist from Joao Cancelo.
The victory ended Aston Villa’s 100 per cent record in the Champions League, while Barcelona continued their impressive scoring form in the competition.
Tuesday’s other results saw Inter Milan defeat Feyenoord 3–0, Galatasaray beat Stuttgart 2–0, Sporting CP overcome Shakhtar Donetsk 1–0 and LASK thrash Slovan Bratislava 4–0.
Bodo/Glimt and Lille played out a goalless draw, while Paris Saint-Germain recorded the biggest victory of the night with a 6–0 demolition of Villarreal.
