Gavin Newsom delivers savage verdict on Nicki Minaj serving as White House press secretary after Trump lavished praise on rap superstar: 'We can only pray'

Gavin Newsom said 'We can only pray' Nicki Minaj becomes the White House press secretary after Trump officials boosted the Super Bass singer for the job.

Both Trump and Minaj joked about her replacing Katie Zacharia at an event in Michigan over the weekend where the president complimented the rapper's derriere.

White House Communications Director Steven Cheung even posted about Minaj taking the job, writing: 'Ladies and gentlemen, I think we may have found the new White House Press Secretary!'

Democrat Newsom, seen by many as a potential Presidential candidate for his party in 2028, wrote on social media: 'We can only pray.'

The governor did not expand on why he wanted to see that happen but the pair have tussled in the political arena before.

In January, the rapper took a page from Trump by inventing a new nickname for the California liberal.

'Oh Gavvy pooh, it only gets worse from here for you, buddy,' Minaj wrote on X.

'It’s the end of the road for you, my love. Get on the nearest jet ski & let that beautiful hair blow in the wind. It will make you happier than this race that you will not win. Enjoy life. Peace.'

Minaj also compared Newsom to Tom Cruise but said his presidential ambitions were 'impossible.'

'Gavin is the cute boy who got everything handed to him b/c of how cute & sexy & hot & smoking he was. Oohhh look @‘m. Sitting there in that suit with the sneakers on. He thinks he’s Tom Cruise only difference is, his next mission IS impossible. He should get another leading role'

The Daily Mail has reached out to both Newsom and the White House for comment.

Ahead of the rally, Minaj showed off her political chops during a conversation with  Cheung on Sunday.

The two chatted aboard Air Force One en route to the rally in Michigan. Cheung posted the clip of their conversation, and floated the idea that Minaj may become Trump's new press secretary, after Zacharia's exit earlier this month.

Trump's trusted aide wrote: 'Ladies and gentlemen, I think we may have found the new White House Press Secretary! @NICKIMINAJ.'

Minaj responded to Cheung's post by sharing it with two emojis, an American flag and a laughing face with a bead of sweat, keeping coy about the job proposal.

One of the questions Cheung asked Minaj, who was wearing a $6,000 Gucci suit for the affair, was how she viewed the state of the economy under President Trump.

Minaj responded: 'Well, we have a president who understands economics first of all. You know, I've said before that the president is, naturally, a businessman. He's worked his way out of not having a dollar left in the bank.'

She continued: 'If he can do that himself, with his own finances, surely he knows what to do with the country.'

Touting Trump's foreign policy acumen, Minaj gushed: 'He's tough internationally. He tells them what we need, not what they need.'

Ahead of Trump's rally, Minaj told the Daily Mail: 'This election is the most important midterm election of our lifetimes.'

'We need to make sure that our great President has a great team in Congress to work with during his final two years in office so he can continue to create great programs like the Trump Accounts, which I am a proud supporter of,' she added.

Trump is tapping into celebrity star power in the final days of his midterm campaign swing. Other recent guests have included boxers Mike Tyson, Jake Paul, Floyd Mayweather, Evander Holyfield and country music artist Jason Aldean.

En route to Trump's Sunday afternoon rally in Port Huron, Minaj also touted his work ethic.

'The man won three elections!' she exclaimed, continuing, 'he wakes up at four o'clock in the morning. He outworks people who are half his age.'

'What does that say about his character? He's paying it forward. He's thinking about the other Republicans who have to win in this election. That tells me that he's a great guy,' she said while closing her speech.
