Households warned to 'be ready' for national crisis: Government campaign urges storing food and water for three days, cash in case electronic system collapses, and a wind-up radio

Households warned to 'be ready' for national crisis: Labour campaign urges storing food and water for three days, cash in case electronic system collapses... and a wind-up radio

Households have been warned to 'be ready' for a national crisis in a new campaign launched by Andy Burnham's Government.

Stockpiling three days of food and water, and having enough cash to get by if the electronic payments system collapses are among the precautions recommended.

The checklist of measures - which people are urged to print out and keep handy - also includes having a wind-up or battery radio, and a power pack to charge devices if the power goes off.

Defence Secretary Wes Streeting said the guidance would help people brace for events such as wildfires, flooding and cyber attacks. However, senior officials and military figures have also been highlighting the risk of sabotage or even a strike by Russia.

Mr Streeting insisted 'everyone needs to do their bit' - with a radio and social media campaign set to spread the message in the coming weeks.

However, the Government seems to have taken a very low-key approach to the launch, activating the site without fanfare months after Keir Starmer's administration signalled the campaign was coming.

Mr Streeting's comments came at a launch for an entirely different Government announcement.

The advice emerged as organisations around the world scramble to fix a critical security flaw in the programming language PHP, used by the majority of websites.

Britons have been warned to 'be ready' for a national crisis in a new government campaign

Andy Burnham's Government slipped the advice out with little fanfare this afternoon

Downing Street said no large UK public-facing critical services have been affected – but 32 Government websites have gone dark while issues are resolved.

National Cyber Security Centre experts are working with OpenAI, whose technology was used to discover the vulnerabilities, and partners around the globe to address potential problems, a No10 spokeswoman said.

Speaking at the opening of the UK Gun Hall Plant in Telford, Mr Streeting said of the message to the public: 'Are they prepared for the eventuality that there may be disruption to essential supply chains caused by hostile state actors or terrorists?

'How would we cope if the payment systems of the local supermarket went down?

'Those are the sorts of everyday challenges and threats that we could well face, and it is right that we ask the country to be ready for those things and to ask everyone to do their bit.'

The Be Ready site suggests the principle should be to have enough supplies for three days so people can 'manage while support reaches those most in need'.

That includes three litres per person per day for drinking and more for 'other tasks such as cooking and washing'.

The stockpile also needs to feature 'food with a long shelf life that doesn't need refrigeration or cooking eg tinned meat, fish or vegetables, dried fruit and nuts.

'It's best to buy food you'd usually eat,' the site said.

Blankets, sleeping bags and warm clothing are recommended because 'homes can become cold very quickly when the heating goes off'. Torches are better than candles, seemingly because of fire risk.

Turning to the cash, the guidance suggested keeping a 'mix of coins and notes... in case electronic payments or ATMs are disrupted'.

'The amount of cash you should keep depends on your family's specific needs for essentials,' the site said.

'Have printed copies of important documents such as passports, birth certificates, insurance policy details and instructions for any medical equipment you rely on.'

As well as getting a wind-up or battery radio, households were told: 'For updates during outages, write down frequencies of any national or local radio stations you use for news.'

Families with babies are informed that ready-made or 'ready-to-feed' formula is best, as 'you may not be able to boil water to make up powdered formula safely'.

Britons are urged to 'see what you already have' in the way of essentials and note down 'what you still need, remembering items your family relies on, such as medical supplies, baby formula or pet food'.

An emergency stockpile can be assembled 'gradually', according to the advice.

'Pick up missing items when you can during your regular shopping trips to help spread the cost,' the site said.

Households should then 'check it regularly'. 'Set a reminder every six months to check expiry dates and swap out items that need replacing, or update your kit if your household's needs have changed.'

The site added: 'Talk to your neighbours about what extra support you might be able to share during an outage and swap contact details.'

Should the government be urging us to prepare for disasters, or is this fearmongering that risks causing panic?

What's your view?

The Be Ready site said: 'You could consider keeping some essential items you might need to take with you if asked to leave your home quickly in a spare bag – you might hear some people call this a "grab bag".'

In another section, it added: 'Pack a few essential items in your car boot to make sure you're ready in case of getting stuck in wintry weather – this can include a torch, in-car phone charger, warm clothes and blankets, high-visibility clothing, jump leads, food and drink, and a shovel for snow. It can also be helpful to keep a first aid kit in your car.'

The head of the army, Sir Roly Walker, said last week that the Government needed to start a 'frank conversation' with the public about the need to prepare for war.

Security Minister Dan Jarvis said today that 'those who can' follow the preparedness advice should – stressing similar guidance was issued in France, Ireland and the Netherlands.

'By taking simple steps to be ready for everyday emergencies like severe storms, people can reduce pressure on emergency services, helping them prioritise people who need more support in an emergency,' he said.

'This is just the sort of community-focused campaign the UK needs to improve our resilience as a nation. It will bring us into line with European counterparts, where advice like this is a normal part of everyday life. '

Questions are continuing to mount over Bill Belichick and Jordon Hudson's secret split after the high-profile pair appeared to continue flaunting their relationship – months after supposedly calling it a day.

A bombshell TMZ report on Friday night revealed the age-gap romance came to an end 'late last year,' with the pair somehow managing to keep their break-up a secret for almost a year.

Late on Friday night, a separate report from USA Today claimed that UNC staffers had been 'caught off-guard' by news of Belichick and Hudson's split, with two anonymous employees admitting they were 'not aware' of the relationship breaking down.

Hudson has still been a mainstay at North Carolina football games this season, appearing by Belichick's side through thick and thin, both in Chapel Hill and on the road – even as recently as this month.

Reports claim they are still 'close friends' and 'remain committed to their business partnerships,' with Hudson listed as a director for multiple companies. That is despite the outlet reporting that she has since moved on and has dated multiple men this year.

So why, then, is there a wealth of loved-up photos taken in 2026, given their supposed romantic split back in the latter stages of 2025?

As recently as this month, the cheerleader has been a constant presence at Belichick's side

The 'former' couple held hands at the Kentucky Derby in May, after their split back in 2025

At high-profile sporting events and in private moments, the Daily Mail has dug out a series of snaps that show all might not be exactly as it seems between the legendary football coach, 74, and the ex-girlfriend 49 years his junior.

Perhaps the most confusing display of public affection came back in May at the Kentucky Derby, supposedly up to six months after they had called time on their romance.

After flying Hudson out on a private jet to the historic horse racing event at Churchill Downs, a suited-and-booted Belichick held her by the hand as they walked on the course.

Doubling down, Hudson later posted two photos to her social media, alongside the caption: 'Not the first time we've trudged through the mud together,' complete with a pink love heart.

In the photos, the pair are beaming, with Belichick's shirt and tie closely matching Hudson's dress.

Another social media post from a month earlier raises yet more eyebrows, after Belichick took time out from his busy football schedule to support Hudson's own sporting endeavor.

Playing the role of doting boyfriend, Belichick cheered Hudson on at her US Worlds Trials, in which she and her 'Cheer Extreme Code Black' team were crowned champion.

In the aftermath, Hudson posted a selfie of the pair, labeling Belichick 'Bill the WAG' while he wore a t-shirt carrying the name of her cheer squad. The term WAG – short for 'wife and girlfriend' – seemingly hinted that their romance was going strong.

Shortly before that April adventure, Belichick and Hudson had spent time in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, attending a basketball game one night on campus.

While nothing was posted on social media by either of them, photographers captured the pair with their arms intertwined as they sat in the bleachers to watch the action.

This, it should be noted, occurred two months into 2026 and long after they had apparently ended their high-profile relationship.

In recent months, Hudson's Instagram account has been dormant, with no new posts in 25 weeks and the most recent photo dump being the loved-up Kentucky Derby appearance.

Despite no images from the source, Hudson has still been closely involved in Belichick's life, appearing in photos taken at at least three of UNC's games just this month.

A report late on Friday claimed UNC staffers had no idea the pair had split before TMZ's reveal

Fans have taken to calling Hudson the 'First Lady of UNC Football' due to her regular presence

Last time out, the Tar Heels lost in overtime to Syracuse, and Hudson was seen in multiple fan photos taking selfies on the sideline in a stylish pink suit.

In one post, she was labeled the 'First Lady of UNC Football' as she grinned for snaps with young supporters.

Seven days earlier, she traveled to Durham, North Carolina with the team for the rivalry game against Duke, which ended with a huge win for Belichick and his players.

At the end of the game, Hudson appeared to cozy up to Belichick as they laughed and walked down the tunnel together.

On October 3, meanwhile, she was again on the sideline again as UNC suffered a loss to No 5 ranked Notre Dame, also at Chapel Hill.

The Daily Mail has reached out to the pair for comment.
