Single mother-of-six who worked as chef killed in hit-and-run collision

A single mother of six was killed when an SUV driver plowed into her and then fled the scene.

Smaah Adam, 46, a chef from Egypt who worked at Feast World Kitchen in Spokane, Washington, died after the collision Monday night.

Washington police were alerted to a car crash report at the intersection of Maxwell Avenue and Walnut Street at approximately 5.30pm, according to The Spokesman-Review.

Adam was found at the scene in critical condition and later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

Investigators believe a black SUV ran her down after reviewing surveillance footage, but a person of interest has not been identified, according to police.

The staff at Feast World Kitchen, which is a nonprofit organization that unites immigrant and refugee chefs to share their food and cultures, are mourning the death of Adam.

Co-founder Ross Carper says Smaah was like family to him.

'Getting to know her and her kids has been an honor for us here,' Carper told KXLY.

Police investigated nearby surveillance footage and now have a vehicle of interest in connection with the death

'It's been really hard to know that the person responsible for this is still not being held accountable, that they haven't been able to make an arrest, and that those kids and Smaah deserve closure and accountability.'

Carper told KXLY that Smaah came to the United States a bit over a decade ago from Egypt, where she fled from violence and war.

He said that Smaah had been cooking at Feast World Kitchen for more than five years.

Three of Smaah's children were also participants in the Feast World Kitchen program, Carper told KREM 2 NEWS.

'The kids are amazing; they're talented,' Carper said.

Now the restaurant is raising donations via GiveCloud to support 'Smaah's funeral expenses and her six beloved kids.'

The restaurant took to Instagram to share their condolences, stating: 'Rest in peace, my sister.'

'May Allah grant you Jannah and give us the strength to care for your six beloved children and everyone you left behind,' the post said. 'Please keep Smaah, her children, and all of us who loved her in your thoughts and prayers.'

The Daily Mail has contacted the Spokane police department for further updates on the incident.
