is a senior correspondent and author of Notepad, who has been covering all things Microsoft, PC, and tech for over 20 years.

Discord is finally giving up on Electron, the cross-platform framework that lets developers build desktop apps using web technologies. Electron web apps are notoriously heavy on system resources, and Discord is now moving its desktop app fully to Rust — a modern programming language designed for speed and memory safety.

“We’ve been early adopters of Rust since 2018 and a lot of our infra, voice tech, and even some of the current client is already Rust, the holy grail was getting the whole client there,” explains Discord chief technology officer Stanislav Vishnevskiy in a post on X. “That means Electron goes away, and so does React Native, mobile keeps native UI but shares app code with desktop via Rust.”

Vishnevskiy also shared an image of the Discord Windows client using just 290MB of RAM, which is a clear improvement as you only have to participate in a few servers and RAM usage can easily hit 1GB or more using the current Windows app.

It’s not clear when Discord will make the full switch over to Rust, but Vishnevskiy says the company “hope to get it into testing with users soon.”

CEO Carl Pei says Nothing’s first ‘AI-native’ device ‘couldn’t have been an app.’

is a news writer covering all things consumer tech. Stevie started out at Laptop Mag writing news and reviews on hardware, gaming, and AI.

Nothing CEO Carl Pei said in a post on X that the company’s launching its first AI device in December. That’s just a little over a year after Pei announced plans for “AI-native” devices and an AI operating system. He didn’t give away much about what exactly the new device is, only that one feature it won’t have is a screen:

“Our first AI-native product ships next month. It’s a tool, but one built with the personality and care that have come to define a Nothing product. It has no new screen, and it couldn’t have been an app.”

Pei shared an image with the post that says “NOTHING(R)” in the top left corner, above an ambiguous black rounded corner. Last month, a rumor claimed Nothing is planning to launch two pairs of AI smart glasses, including one without cameras, and an earlier rumor said it’s “repositioning itself as an AI-first company” with a shift to AI accessories.

Nothing’s AI device wouldn’t be the first screen-free AI gadget, following the likes of the Humane AI pin, the Friend, and even AI stuffed animals. OpenAI is also reportedly working on an AI smart speaker with Jony Ive. Pei alluded to earlier AI devices, saying, “the whole industry is hunting for its iPhone moment: the pendant, the pin, the glasses, the companion, some magical consumer device that makes AI part of everyone’s life.” He added, “Looking for the iPhone of AI today is a dead end.”
