's blunt assessment of the Republican Party's midterm defeat, throwing the spotlight on divisions within the president's own camp over the Iran war.

Trump Jr endorsed Vance's lengthy post on X, in which the vice president blamed the Republicans' electoral setback on the administration's failure to address voters' concerns over the Iran conflict, rising living costs and US foreign policy.

"The reason we lost is the war. The president himself said so last night," Vance wrote.

Barely an hour later, Trump Jr reposted the message, adding: "Every word of this is 💯💯💯."

According to Vance, the four main concerns driving their discontent were ending the war, tackling inflation and the cost of living, putting America first and changing the country's relationship with Israel.

"If you'd like to argue it was worth it, that losing the Senate for the next 6 years was worth it, then do so. Argue it was a worthwhile cost to pay. Agree or disagree, that's at least honest," Vance wrote.

He also acknowledged that voters who had previously warned against the war were justified in their criticism, urging Republicans to use the election setback as an opportunity to reassess their approach.

Trump shifts blame after Republican losses

Trump, meanwhile, sought to distance himself from the Republican defeat, arguing that he was not personally on the ballot.

"I wasn't on the Ballot and if I was, we would have won IN A LANDSLIDE!" he wrote on Truth Social shortly after polls closed on Tuesday.

Democrats won control of both chambers. The Senate is projected to have 54 Democrats and independents who caucus with them, against 44 Republicans, with two races uncalled. They flipped at least seven Republican-held seats and more than two dozen House districts.

Top News Audio Briefing - 04 Nov 2026, 10 PM

1- Good evening, and welcome to the Times of India's Top News Audio Briefing.
2- We have a packed briefing for you tonight, covering major political shifts in the US, significant changes to India's Agnipath scheme, and more.
3- First up, a political earthquake in the United States. Democrats have delivered a stunning repudiation to President Donald Trump and his Republican Party, sweeping both chambers of Congress in the recent midterm elections.
4- Indeed, it was a rout of epic proportions. Democrats wrested control of both the Senate and the House of Representatives, flipping seven Republican-held Senate seats and gaining more than two dozen House districts. This included surprising victories in traditional GOP strongholds like Texas, where Democrat Gina Hinojosa became the first Latina governor, and James Talarico, the first Democratic Senator from the state since 1988.
5- This shift in congressional power raises significant questions for Indian-Americans, who have shown growing concerns over immigration restrictions, employment opportunities, and issues of identity. A recent Carnegie Endowment survey found that a striking sixty-two percent of Indian-American citizens intended to vote for Democratic congressional candidates, a notable shift from previous elections.
6- These concerns are deeply rooted in policy changes. The Trump administration's efforts to make the H-1B program more expensive and selective, despite federal courts blocking some measures, have directly impacted Indian professionals. Furthermore, the US Labor Department suspended eight technology companies, including Indian IT firms like Tata Consultancy Services and Infosys, from the Permanent Labor Certification program, affecting foreign workers seeking permanent residency.
7- Adding to the voter dissatisfaction was the ongoing war with Iran. Exit polls revealed that nearly nine in ten voters identified the cost of living as a crucial factor, with two-thirds blaming Trump for high prices. The Iran conflict itself was considered the wrong move by six in ten voters, and a crucial factor for a third of them.
8- The conflict remains unresolved, months after the killing of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. US forces carried out limited strikes on Iranian targets near the Strait of Hormuz just hours before the American elections. Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also faces a political deadlock at home, struggling to secure a parliamentary majority after Israel's recent elections.
9- It's a stark irony, as one analyst put it, that the president who wanted to change the political order in Tehran has found the 'regime changing' in his own United States. The new Democratic-controlled Congress will now have greater powers to investigate the administration and scrutinize the war.
10- Turning our focus to India, there's positive news for nearly twenty thousand Agniveers. The Union Cabinet has approved a two-year extension to their service, a decision that comes just as the initial batch was nearing the end of its four-year term.
11- This is a significant change. Under the revised Agnipath scheme, while twenty-five percent will still be absorbed into the permanent cadre, the remaining seventy-five percent will now be offered a second engagement of two years. After this extended period, all Agniveers will have another opportunity to enroll as regular soldiers, subject to selection criteria. This also comes with higher pay and increased government contribution to their Seva Nidhi package.
12- In other news, NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar was readmitted to Breach Candy Hospital on Wednesday, just hours after being discharged earlier in the day. His daughter, Supriya Sule, posted on X that he was admitted for further tests, following complaints of pleuritic pain.
13- Prime Minister Narendra Modi had earlier called Mr. Pawar to inquire about his health, advising him to take complete rest. Mr. Pawar's aide stated that the Prime Minister expressed affection and respect, telling him that Supriya and others would take care of the country while he rested.
14- From the Supreme Court, Chief Justice of India Surya Kant offered a rather unique suggestion to a petitioner this week. While rejecting a plea seeking mandatory rotation of SC/ST reserved seats, the CJI quipped that the petitioner was 'dialling the wrong number' and should instead organize public protests.
15- The bench upheld the A
