The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court received 6,727 new cases and disposed of 5,625 in the 2025/2026 legal year, the Chief Judge, Justice Husseini Baba-Yusuf, has said.

Baba-Yusuf disclosed this on Wednesday at the ceremony marking the commencement of the court’s 2026/2027 legal year in Abuja.

The Magistrates’ Courts recorded 23,200 new cases and disposed of 19,292 within the same period.

At the Abuja Multi-Door Courthouse (AMDC), 252 new cases were received, while 195 were disposed of during the legal year.

Baba-Yusuf said the commencement of a new legal year provided an opportunity for the judiciary to review its activities and assess progress in the administration of justice.

He said the judiciary remained committed to serving with integrity, impartiality and diligence, adding that cases before the courts involved disputes that required fair hearings and judgments in accordance with the law.

“For us in the FCT judiciary, every new legal year carries a renewed obligation to serve with integrity, courage, impartiality and diligence.

“It reminds us that behind every case file is a human experience; behind every dispute is an issue that deserves a fair trial and behind every judgment is the responsibility for the constitution, the law and the people of Nigeria,” he said.

He said efforts to improve the administration of justice had shown the need for reforms beyond incremental adjustments.

According to him, the judiciary would prioritise a review of its rules of court and practice directions, infrastructure development, human capital development, digitalisation and improved case management.

He also identified automation of court operations, capacity development for judicial officers and personnel, and improved access to justice as areas requiring attention.
