The AI-generated sci-fi film Gods Don’t Give Gifts has added a bit of star power: Pop star Grimes is going to appear in the movie. Billed as “the first AI film to come to theatres,” Gods Don’t Give Gifts is a notable test case for the commercial potential of AI films, and it releases on December 4th. Grimes — who will be lending both her likeness and vocal performance to the movie, which you can see in the clip above — potentially gives the project some legitimacy.
AI studio Fable, which is producing the film, claimed in a press release that “casting the likeness of an actor with their spoken vocal performance will become more common with animated films using AI: audiences will see actors, athletes, musicians giving vocal performances with their likeness in films.” Gods Don’t Give Gifts is being directed by Jack London, better known under the online handle Gossip Goblin.
Gods Don’t Give Gifts is an anthology that’s set in a future “where bodies are disposable and consciousness has been commoditized” and depicts what happens when “four interconnected stories collide with the horrifying consequences of humanity’s attempt to transcend the flesh.” Those themes seem to fit pretty snugly with Grimes’ interests, as she has explored themes of transhumanism and artificial intelligence in the past. It’s also not the only AI project she’s working on, with an AI-themed album called Psy Opera in the works.
Here’s the trailer for Gods Don’t Give Gifts:
While there has been plenty of hype around the potential for AI in Hollywood, there’s yet to be a project that shows that the technology is actually a vital storytelling tool. Previous examples, like two different takes on The Odyssey — including one made with Elon Musk’s Grok — have left plenty to be desired.
