A 7.5MVA electricity injection substation project has commenced in Rigasa, Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State, in an intervention aimed at addressing about 15 years of inadequate power supply in the densely populated community.
The project, facilitated by the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Ideological Group (BAT-IG) and implemented by the Niger Delta Power Holding Company Limited (NDPHC) in collaboration with the Kaduna State Government, comprises a 7.5MVA 33/11kV injection substation, a two-kilometre 11kV distribution line and a 1.5-kilometre 33kV line.
The groundbreaking ceremony was held in Rigasa on Friday, with Hadiza Sabuwa Balarabe, deputy governor, performing the ceremony on behalf of Governor Uba Sani.
Speaking at the event, Balarabe said improved electricity supply would support business expansion, increase productivity and ease the burden on households, while reaffirming the state government’s commitment to infrastructure development through strategic partnerships.
The project is expected to strengthen the electricity distribution network and provide additional capacity to serve households, businesses and other electricity consumers in the community.
Bamidele Atoyebi, convener of BAT-IG, said the intervention followed concerns raised by residents over persistent electricity challenges and reflected the group’s position that political participation should translate into practical solutions to community problems.
He said BAT-IG had facilitated more than 100 interventions across different sectors, adding that the Rigasa project was part of its efforts to respond to residents’ needs.
“Where there is a problem, we can help solve it. We will not merely complain about it. We will organise, mobilise and act,” he said.
Atoyebi said the benefits of the project would extend beyond electricity supply to include increased economic opportunities, stronger businesses, improved security and better livelihoods for residents.
He described the intervention as an example of what he called “the politics of service” and “the politics of solution”, saying it represented the group’s contribution to President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Bello Babayo Bello, the executive director, Networks, NDPHC, represented the company’s managing director and chief executive officer, Jennifer Adighije, at the ceremony.
Also present was Patrick Obahiagbon, executive director, strategy and commercial, NDPHC, alongside Rigasa District Head Mohammed Aminu Idris.
Other dignitaries included Lateef Olasunkanmi Fagbemi, attorney-general of the federation and minister of justice, who is the grand patron of BAT-IG, and Senator Abu Ibrahim.
The project is expected to expand electricity distribution capacity in Rigasa as construction progresses, with residents and businesses awaiting improvements in the reliability of power supply.
