Republican fury at Trump erupts as Ted Cruz piles on public bashing after 'Watergate-level' embarrassment: Live updates

Republican fury at Trump erupts as Ted Cruz piles on public bashing after 'Watergate-level' embarrassment: Live updates

After the Democrats shattered Republican hopes across the country with a midterm 'bluenami' handing them control of Congress, Trump's administration is facing intense scrutiny from party members.

Republican senator Ted Cruz described the Democratic sweep as an 'a**-kicking' for the GOP in an episode of his podcast on Wednesday, dramatically declaring that 'it was not simply a bad 2006 midterm election, it was a Watergate-level repudiation.'

The Texas senator said Republicans didn't do enough to 'address their very real pain,' adding that food, gas, diesel, insurance and 'life' were all too high. 'Too many Republican politicians seem like they didn’t understand or they didn’t care,' he lamented.

While Chief of Staff Susie Wiles and Secretary of State Marco Rubio find themselves under cabinet pressure, it did not take long until calls for a scapegoat to take the blame for one of the most bruising midterm defeats in modern political history got loud.

A White House insider familiar with the President's phone calls told the Daily Mail that Trump had been canvassing a handful of close advisers whether to get rid of his Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.

And those sources now expect Hegseth gone before the new Congress is sworn in next January. As of Thursday morning, Trump insisted he has 'every intention to keep him.'

Ted Cruz laments 'Watergate-level repudiation' following Dem sweep

Republican senator Ted Cruz described the Democratic sweep as an 'a**-kicking' for the GOP in an episode of his podcast on Wednesday, dramatically declaring that 'it was not simply a bad 2006 midterm election, it was a Watergate-level repudiation.'

Referring to the blitz as 'blue tsunami,' he said that 'understandably, people were pissed off,' citing tariffs rising costs and the Iran war for the party's midterm failures.

'Republicans didn’t do enough to address their very real pain,' he continued.

'We need to listen and respond. We need to champion economic policies that make a real difference in working people’s lives, and we need to deal with the consequences,' he said.

Breaking:Democrat Scott Colom eyes historic victory as he might flip Mississippi's Senate seat blue for the first time in four decades

The AP updated its vote count as at 12.17pm on Thursday with 96 percent of votes processed.

A Democratic victory in the Magnolia State would mean another historic upset as Mississippians have not had a Democratic senator in over four decades.

Trump has 'no issues' with JD Vance's post criticizing Iran war

The official told the BBC that Trump 'backed it up' during his remarks at the White House Wednesday, as a sign that he was not offended by the vice president's statement.

Breaking:DOJ civil rights chief Harmeet Dhillon expected to resign as early as today: Reports

Harmeet Dhillon is expected to resign as the assistant attorney general for the Justice Department's civil rights division as early as today - the first in a string of likely departures as the Trump administration braces for Democrats to retake control of the House and Senate.

The Justice Department did not immediately respond to the Daily Mail's request for comment on the news, first reported by Bloomberg.

A group of former DOJ officials said in a statement Thursday that Dhillon had 'decimated' the division's more than 70-year mandate - shifting the division's focus away from protecting vulnerable communities and towards conservative causes.

More than three-quarters of lawyers in the division left during her tenure, the group noted in a statement.

'Harmeet Dhillon has been the most destructive, lawless, and hateful head of the Civil Rights Division in DOJ history,' Stacey Young, the executive director of the Justice Connection, said Thursday.

Former speaker of the House Newt Gingrich spoke out on the massive midterm loss for the GOP:

'This was a failed performance election and that reality overwhelmed virtually everything else.'

In another post yesterday, Gingrich also gave his verdict for the 2028 White House battle inside the Republican Party: 'The scale of the Republican defeat is so great that it makes the race for the GOP presidential nomination wide open.'
