The Lagos State Safety Commission has urged spa and beauty businesses to tighten hygiene, workplace safety and risk-control measures, warning that negligence in the industry could endanger clients and expose workers to preventable injuries and health problems.
The commission said operators must treat safety as part of professional service delivery rather than an optional requirement.
The Director of Administration and Human Resources, Awolesi Ademola, who represented the Director-General, Lanre Mojola, gave the charge at a one-day training programme for beauty industry operators themed “Safe Hands, Safe Spaces: Building a Zero-Harm Culture in the Spa and Beauty Industry.”
Ademola said the training was intended to help practitioners identify workplace hazards, assess operational risks and adopt measures to prevent accidents.
He said the responsibility for a safe business environment extended beyond regulatory compliance, requiring operators and employees to make risk prevention part of their daily routines.
Mojola urged participants to translate the lessons from the programme into improved workplace practices, better protection for clients and safer conditions for staff.
He said the commission remained committed to extending safety awareness across sectors of the Lagos economy to protect workers, business operators, residents and visitors.
The training examined two areas of occupational risk in the industry: hazard identification in spa operations and the health implications of work-related strain on beauty professionals.
The Lagos State Chairman of the Institute of Safety Professionals of Nigeria, Olusola Ogunleye, spoke on “Beyond Beauty: Advanced Risk Assessment and Hazard Control in Spa Operations”, highlighting the need to identify hazards and apply appropriate control measures.
The Chief Medical Director of Skintetics Clinics, Chuka Imo, addressed occupational health and ergonomic safety, focusing on measures to protect beauty professionals from work-related health risks.
Speaking, the Head of the Commission’s Spa, Gym, Cinema, Parks and Gardens Unit, Abiola Mary Abiola, urged participants to apply the lessons from the training in their businesses.
