Michael Carrick will remain in charge of Manchester United for Saturday’s Premier League trip to Chelsea despite mounting speculation on his future following a dismal run of results.

The under-pressure head coach has gone eight matches without a win in all competitions, with Sunday’s 3–0 home defeat to Bournemouth leaving United 16th in the Premier League table, just one point above the relegation zone.

Reports from the BBC, Sky Sports and the Press Association confirmed on Tuesday that Carrick would lead the team at Stamford Bridge, as the club’s hierarchy allows him to turn around United’s fortunes.

The 45-year-old arrived at the club’s Carrington training ground on Tuesday to oversee training as preparations continued for the weekend fixture.

According to the BBC, sources at the club indicated that Carrick would be given time to improve results despite growing concerns over the team’s performances.

Carrick was handed a two-year contract in May after overseeing an impressive revival as interim manager following Ruben Amorim’s departure. United finished third in the Premier League under his leadership, securing qualification for the UEFA Champions League.

However, the team’s form has deteriorated sharply this season. United have collected just seven points from their opening eight league matches, marking their worst start to a league campaign at this stage since 1986/87.

The defeat to Bournemouth followed a damaging 4–1 loss away to Como in the Champions League, further intensifying scrutiny of Carrick’s tactics and the team’s performances.

Carrick avoided directly addressing questions about his future after the Bournemouth defeat. He acknowledged supporters who chanted his name at full-time, although fans also directed their anger at the players and the club’s hierarchy.

Former United captain Wayne Rooney, who played alongside Carrick at Old Trafford, criticised the players over their recent performances.

“The players haven’t got a leg to stand on. What’s not fair is the performances they are giving,” Rooney said on the Stick to United podcast.

“I looked at the fans; you could see the pain and anger in their faces when those players were walking around the football pitch.”

Man United now face a crucial test against Chelsea on Saturday as Carrick attempts to halt the winless run and ease the pressure surrounding his position at Old Trafford.
