Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi was on target as Coventry City secured a 3-1 victory over Sunderland, climbing out of the Premier League relegation zone with an impressive performance against the bottom-placed side.

Awoniyi doubled Coventry’s lead in the 37th minute, finishing after a deflection off a Sunderland defender.

Sunderland, meanwhile, endured a difficult afternoon, conceding three goals before Enzo Le Fée converted a penalty in the 66th minute. The visitors also finished the match with 10 men after Omar Alderete was sent off for a second bookable offence.

Coventry changed their starting line-up, with Stephen Mfuni coming on after Bobby Thomas was ruled out with injury.

Victor Torp and Yann Gboho made their Premier League debuts, while Awoniyi was also named in the starting XI. Ethan Pinnock captained the side.

Sunderland’s Chris Rigg created the first opportunity of the match, but his effort was saved.

The hosts took the lead in the 28th minute when Sakamoto found the net following a deflected cross.

Awoniyi then extended Coventry’s advantage nine minutes later to put Frank Lampard’s side firmly in control.

Coventry made it 3-0 in the 52nd minute when Jack Rudoni’s effort took a deflection and beat the Sunderland goalkeeper.

Sunderland missed an opportunity to reduce the deficit when Chemsdine Talbi shot wide. The visitors were later awarded a penalty after Pinnock handled the ball, allowing Le Fée to score from the spot.
Coventry remained organised as Sunderland pushed for another goal, with the hosts blocking further efforts, including attempts from Luke O’Nien.

Alderete’s dismissal in the closing stages further complicated Sunderland’s afternoon, as Coventry held on to secure all three points.

Reflecting on the performance, Lampard told Sky Sports: “The performance was really good. I thought we started the game well and continued to get our rewards for that.

“From beginning to end, in the different modes of the game. Even when it went to 3-1, and we had to see it out professionally, I thought we did.

“I love the way we approached it. Don’t sit back; keep pushing and doing the same things, but it won’t always be that way.

“We dealt with the stuff at the end of the game as well. It ended up being relatively comfortable with the two-goal margin. I’m pleased with the players because they’ll feel it, and they’ll understand it, I hope, and we’ll move on to the next.”
